We never operated on or near the 3/4 or the APC's. I am not a real technical person but I believe the PRD1 would not operate effectively too close to all the metal. Even when we operated near a base camp, we tried to get the equipment away from the wire, etc.On one occasion, we were on a Fire Support Base and I had bunkered in the equipment. SOP required we keep the thermite grenades with us to destroy the equipment, comus pads, etc if we were over-run.

On this occasion, we were over-run.

The VC ran by my bunker almost into the equipment but did not give it a second glance. It is very doubtful I would have destroyed the equipment anyway because, as you know, the KY8 was not cheap and also because the FSB commander was a Captain who's machismo would never have let him admit there was danger in the equipment being compromised. Had I burned the equipment, he would never have supported me The higher ups were assholes and probably would have court martialed me for the loss.
