407th was assigned to the 5th Mech Infantry, worked from positions in
tracks. The 265th RRU was assigned to the 101st. Most of my time was spent with the 101st,
hence my address. When the 101st stood down in early 72 instead of going home early, I and
others got to stay. They gave us the critical MOS story. I went back to Phu Bai for about a day
and volunteered to go to what was left of the 407th. The 5th Mech was long gone by that time.
If I would have stayed in Phu Bai I probably would still be in jail. The 407th by this time worked
off of fixed sites along the DMZ. People in Phu Bai did not know we existed, we used re-supply
ourselves by truck until the roads got real unstable, each time we left Phu Bai the guards thought
we were going into Hue to have fun.The butt heads did not believe there were any Americans up North.
Wasn't until I got to the 313th at Bragg that I found out we were called Company A Det A .
They were about 10-12 of us ASA types along with a mixed bag of advisers, naval gunfire support,
air force FACS, "snake eaters", some "company" people who used to bring us burn bags, and I
did not even ask from where. The funny thing that happened was that we had an ASA MP get
shrapnel in the butt trying to take pics of incoming.
